the art of quiet…

Far from uncommon, the affliction for women of all ages, shapes and nationalities, is the debilitating emotional war of body self-worth.

Healthy body image has been eroded by years of commercial beauty perfection as the ideal. From advertising, movies, television, magazines, beauty pageants, modeling, newspapers and the business arena – women have been subject to the beauty perfection norm and the resulting landslide defeat that women who fall outside the mould are ultimately bombarded with.

Not withstanding the many women, who in spite of the ever trawling pressure, stand strong to their self-belief.  But for millions of women who fail to have the luxury of an iron-rod emotional intelligence – this constant river of feedback from society – breathes a second-rate, under-valued, unappreciated trap to self-worth.

It was with this premise that a body of work was born… exploring over the next few years, my own disfigured sense of body image.

Over a period of two and a half years, while living in three different apartments in one of Kalk Bay’s historical buildings and blessed with exquisite natural light – I began an inner journey of my less than perfect outer self.

I captured my pure and natural form – devoid of clothing camouflage – in order to get to the essence of my battered self-esteem and body image. The exploration became part celebration, part acceptance, part rebellion.

A deeply personal and at times, painful journey, over a life-time of just not being good enough.
