Peta Sarkis Bio & Artist Statement
Peta Sarkis was born in 1966 in South Africa and moved to New Zealand in the early 1990’s. She completed a degree in Strategic Marketing & International Management (First Class Hons) and a graduate diploma in Direct Marketing while in New Zealand. She followed a career in Marketing for the next eight years in New Zealand and Australia. Peta returned to Johannesburg by 2000 working in the Direct Selling industry as a forecaster and later a Fragrance Category Manager.
In 2006, Peta left the corporate environment, moving to Cape Town to pursue a life as a photographer and curator. Since September 2006, she has worked as a Gallery Manager and Curator, part-time gallery owner and photographer, taking on various projects and challenges each year.
In 2006, she entered her first photographic competition, reaching the finals of the Sasol New Signature Competition with an image of two white street children in Kalk Bay, Cape Town.
From 2007 to 2009, Peta explored a body of self-portrait nudes while living in one of Kalk Bay’s historical buildings. A bit of a purist – she believed in using only the natural light to capture the life stage of her SELF - no Photoshop was used in any of the single image captures. Peta has received much praise for a body of work that is unique, honest, emotive and deeply personal.
In 2011, Peta completed a self-designed photographic challenge – 100days100beaches, capturing 100 of Cape Town’s spectacular beaches, bays or points in 100 consecutive days, regardless of weather or conditions, and again using no Photoshop. Peta was sponsored to exhibition of all 100 images in Germany in 2011 and invited to exhibit at the Month of Photography in Cape Town in 2012. The Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille buying three of the prints for her offices.
